Managing CO2 to Improve Outcomes in Chronic Respiratory Failure Patients

Elevated CO2 levels are associated with increased mortality and morbidity, especially for patients with chronic hypercapnia secondary to COPD, OHS, and NMD. Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) can offload respiratory muscles and increase alveolar ventilation to improve CO2 clearance and reduce excess total body CO2 stores. The ability to monitor changes in CO2 and having strategies in place to reduce baseline CO2 is critical to improve outcomes in patients with hypercapnic respiratory failure.

After this presentation, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the harmful effects of elevated blood CO2

  • Explain the importance of reducing baseline CO2 in patients with hypercapnic respiratory failure

  • Differentiate the various strategies available to monitor blood CO2 in the outpatient setting
